part 1: "EBB" by Jessica Rosen at Papaya Playa Project, Tulum

Jessica Rosen developed and presented the 2 part sonic ritual "EBB and FLOW" during a residency with Love Academy at Papaya Playa Project (PPP) in Tulum, Mexico. PPP is situated along 1km of beachfront of the Caribbean Sea, so you could hear, see, smell and feel the ocean in every moment. This work was created under the influence of this undeniable oceanic presence to synchronize and move with the momentum of the ocean’s cycles. The residency happened just after a powerful eclipse season, mid-pandemic when it seemed important to channel the collective chaotic residue and refocus. The ritual uses mantra, field recordings, installation, traditional sacred instruments and custom made electro-acoustic instruments. It was presented in 2 parts that were synchronized to and moving with the tidal cycle. The momentum of the ritual was also supported by large scale pendulums made from stones from the beach. The first half of the ritual, EBB, was performed during the ebb of the low tide. One week later, the second half, FLOW, was performed with the flow of the rising tide. The ritual required one week between each performance because elements of EBB needed to remain buried in the sand for 7 days to be cleansed and transformed. These elements were then dug up and used during FLOW, performed at high tide. FLOW will soon be presented in a separate video on this channel.
